It was a beautiful day filled with bright golden sunshine, and now the sun has set and twilight approaches.
Rebecca is "stepping out" for an enchanting evening of chamber music held in the drawing room of one of the wealthy patrons of the arts, as was the custom of the time. Later, her carriage will arrive to return her to her home while the lingering strains of the gentle music enfold her creating fond memories of a very enjoyable evening.
"Little Victorian Facts"
Dresses of this time were beautifully draped with a gathering of material in the back forming a small bustle and then releasing into a graceful train. Dresses were, many times, decorated with cascading real or silk flowers. Evening fabrics were soft and flowing.
The gown that Rebecca has designed and made for this occasion, is a cloud of pink chiffon and white lace, with cascading silk roses
descending from the shoulder to form a small bustle in the back and then gracefully falling down the train of this exquisite evening gown.
The above is a sample of the stories, histories, and gown descriptions which accompany each dress.
Introducing Jonathon
Jonathon is the son of the owner of the local dry goods store where Rebecca and her mother purchase their fabrics for their dresses. On these visits, Rebecca notices Jonathon peeking at her through the open spaces of the bolts of fabric on the shelves and I am sure Jonathon is aware of Rebecca's sly glances as she studies the various fabrics in contemplation of her new dress. The relationship starts to form as he later is anxious to wait on her for her purchases. He attends the College of Charleston, the first municipal college in America, which was at that time a college for men only. At a graduation party in honor of a small group of graduates, Rebecca and Jonathon meet in a social setting and this is the beginning of a relationship which goes into the next 6 books, starting with
