An Evening Under the Stars
It is a beautiful starlit night, a perfect night for a musical celebration under the stars. The warm summer air is slightly cooled by a soft gentle breeze. The celebration is honoring a small group of young men being graduated in the class of 1874 from The College of Charleston. This was the first municipal college in the country and was a men's college. The hosts of the party are the grandparents of one of these young men. A string ensemble has been acquired, an outdoor dance floor has been laid, and refreshments are being served on the veranda to the many young people who have been invited to share this celebration.
But this is also a special night for Rebecca who noticed that Jonathon, the young man from the dry goods store, seems to also attend most of the functions that she has attended. While listening to the music, they seem to overcome their initial shyness and have become better acquainted. They have strolled the gardens in deep conversation, danced a few waltzes, shared the refreshments, and seem to have enjoyed every moment.
Little Victorian Facts
The evening gowns were of varying lengths and styles to accommodate the activities for which they would be worn.
Full constricting draping and heavy trains were many times substituted for ornate trim, flounces and ruffles, making the dress lighter and freedom of movement easier.
Rebecca's Dress
For this outdoor occasion in the warmth of the summer night, and for the freedom of strolling the gardens and dancing to the strains of the music, Rebecca chose the coolness of a soft cotton yellow material. The front of the dress was lightly draped and edged in double lace pulled up into a bow bustle in the back. The underskirt was made of tiers of soft ruffles. The finishing adornment was fresh white daisies with deep green leaves.
