"At the Ball"

An invitation to a ball was always an
exciting event for Rebecca and was the
height of the social season. What to wear
and how to fix her hair were major
considerations.
As Rebecca had become a very
accomplished designer and seamstress,
she eagerly looked forward to designing
and sewing her own gowns for these
special occasions.
Now at the ball, held in the ballroom of
one of the stately homes on East Battery,
Rebecca slowly descends the beautiful
winding staircase where many prospective
suitors are anxiously waiting to fill her
dance program.

Little Victorian Facts
Ball gowns were very elaborately draped
and trains or sweepers were the style of the
times. They always had low necklines and
short sleeves. Long gloves were worn with
velvet or satin bands adorning the wrist and
narrower ribbons at the neckline.

The gown that Rebecca designed for this
important ball to benefit the Charleston
Symphony of the time was a lovely creation
of white satin and lace with lavender satin bows
accenting the design and adding a delicate
touch of color to the gown. The sweeper was
somewhat shorter than many, as its drape was
mainly in the front, allowing for more graceful
movements on the ballroom floor.
