#10cc Three Generations

Bonnie Holden's  Charleston Collection

Victorian Scenes of Charleston, SC

"THREE GENERATIONS"

There have always been flower ladies throughout the world and through the ages.  These are those ladies who make an otherwise drab street corner a little brighter, a little cheerier and a nicer place to see.  Many times, and especially in certain seasons, they grow their own flowers and the sweet grass for  their baskets, and many times, as in this scene here flower selling is carried down through the generations.  In this scene, the grandmother, her daughter and her little granddaughter, with her shoes off, enjoying the warmth of the pavement, all stand ready for a day of flower selling.

#11cc  A Visit With Grandma
"A VISIT WITH GRANDMA"
A warm spring morning finds this little fellow and his pal stopping by for a visit with his Grandmother.  She is a basket lady and she grows the sweet grass for her baskets in the marsh beside her home which is located on a busy highway.  She then sits in front of her display waiting for the business of the day, all the while demonstrating her craft.  Here her little grandson after trying his hand at the craft and deciding this is not for him, sits back and looks on in admiration.

#13cc Market Day

"MARKET DAY"

Most cities had markets similar to this as part of their past, where once or twice a week the produce would be brought in for sale to the city folks. At this time,  the market would become a beehive of activity, horse drawn wagons would deliver the produce from the outlying areas.  In this scene, a young mother selects produce from a bin of fruits, while the vender stands ready to weigh her choices.  Her little daughter being a little too short, stretches a little taller to become a part of it all.  The lady in the green dress waits patiently for their possible purchases.  The sidewalk venders, such as the flower-basket lady and the peanut man with his peanuts at just 3 cents a bag as well as the couples strolling and even the boy chasing his dog, all add to the excitement of Market Day.
