#4cc Church Street

Bonnie Holden's

Olde Charleston Collection

Victorian Scenes of Charleston, SC

"EARLY MORNING ON CHURCH STREET"

It is early morning on Church Street and the citizenry is not yet up and about.  Only the clop clop of the horses and the sound of the carriage wheels can be heard.  The majesty of the St. Phillip's steeple overtakes the middle of the street as even the street bows to it and circles around the awesome structure.  The Dock Street Theatre, the oldest theatre in America,  commands the foreground.  It is still used as a theatre today and is virtually unchanged inside.

#5cc The Pink House (Vacation Time)

"THE PINK HOUSE"
(Vacation Time)

Vacation time, the long awaited and planned for time has finally arrived and this will be a trip to visit relatives seldom seen.  The family having stopped at the "Pink House" for the noon day meal, prepare to resume their journey, the father always carrying the strongbox holding the heavy coins of the period.  The new travelers, having already secured their cases atop the carriage are also anxious to be on their way.

The Pink House was the first house to be built in Charleston and was  named the Pink House because it was surfaced with conch shells and had a pinkish glow.  As the builder had to make all of his own building materials, the inside doorways and the stairway were only 18" wide as only one person used them at a time and it was felt that 18" was sufficient.

#6cc Charleston Single Houses

"CHARLESTON SINGLE HOUSES"

It is a warm spring day, just right for baby's first outing.  Bundled into it's new pram the proud parents stroll the neighborhood anticipating the fond reception of their new infant by their many friends.

The houses depicted in this scene are the popular "single houses" of the period.  In this style home all of the rooms opened off of one side of the main entrance.  The houses were very narrow but very deep as the owners were taxed by the width of the property.  There were no windows on the side of the house facing the piazzas.  This was for privacy purposes.
