#1cc  Rainbow Row

 "RAINBOW ROW"

This street is truly a rainbow of color and comprises some of the most expensive real estate on the East Coast.  These buildings were once the major business section of the city and the shop owners lived over their businesses.  At that time many people could not read or write.  This was especially true of the servants.  Therefore, when shopping had to be done, the servants would be given a shopping list with a piece of fabric the color of the shop attached to the list.  This fabric would identify the list to be given to each shopkeeper.  At one time the buildings fell into disrepair, however, the colors were always kept and now, the buildings have been completely refurbished and used as elegant homes, the colors proudly identify these buildings as Rainbow Row today.

#2cc  Sunday Afternoon on the Battery

"SUNDAY AFTERNOON ON THE BATTERY"

This depicts the era when kite flying was a competitive sport.  On Sunday afternoon the Battery was a social meeting place.  Couples would dress in their "Sunday Best" and stroll the Battery greeting their neighbors as they went along.  The men of the households would have kite flying contests among their neighbors, while the children, who were not allowed to fly kites, would sail little boats on strings in the water below their kite flying fathers.  The women of the households would go around to the near-by park and set up a picnic for the celebration after the competition.

#3cc  Charleston Springtime 1856

"CHARLESTON SPRINGTIME"
1856

It is a beautiful spring morning and the young lady and her driver are out for the young lady's morning visitations.  The little lad takes advantage of the moment of pause to share his apple with the very appreciative horse.

The location is South Battery across the street from the lovely White Point Gardens.  The white house was the home of Dubois  Hayward the author of the opera "Porgy and Bess".  The second house was the weekend home of a very wealthy plantation owner.  The third house was the first house in the city to be built of Greek Revival architecture, and the first to have piazzas.  Now it is a very famous bed and breakfast.
