Bonnie Holden's Paper Dolls
About

While looking back over my childhood, paper dolls were my childhood. I, like many of you, would sit for hours and play with my paper dolls. As I grew older, like many of you, I would draw my own dolls and design the dresses for them. Even when there were talent contests in school, my entry would always be paper dolls. Later, when I graduated from high school, I went to New York to study fashion illustration. I like to say, I went to New York to learn how to do paper dolls better. Actually, I had decided that I wanted to become a fashion illustrator, as I felt that paper dolls were my childhood enjoyment. I worked as a fashion illustrator for a period of 8 years prior to my marriage. After my son was in college, I started painting again, and 26 years ago, I opened an art gallery, painting Victorian homes with a nostalgic theme. These scenes depicted happy family life amid beautiful Victorian America, and always had Victorian people in them with a sentimental story, relating to the scene on the back. This romantic series of 64 scenes is still my mainstay. I am very grateful that I have been quite successful with this endeavor. I have sold this line to 1,800 stores throughout the country including stores such as Nordstrom and even to Disney and Q. V. C. For the past 13 years I have painted for Avon, the cosmetic company. These paintings are always of a Victorian Lady that looks very much like a paper doll. However, nothing has given me the joy and pleasure that I have found creating real paper dolls again. Last year in June of 2000, a paper doll convention was held in Charleston .and some wonderful dedicated paper doll enthusiasts came into my gallery and enlightened me about the exciting world of paper doll collecting and encouraged me to do paper dolls. I have received so much support from these wonderful women that I am now doing what I loved most at the age of 5, and enjoying it even more. My wonderful husband has given me whatever time I needed from the gallery activities to create Rebecca. I hope you will enjoy Rebecca and her books as much as I have bringing her to life.
