NEW ERA" In 1830 the first passenger train went into service on Christmas Day. It flew by streams, pastures, and villages at the amazing speed of 20 miles per hour, as related by one of the passengers. It was initially decided that it would be driven by sail power, of course this did not work. Then another idea was a house on a treadmill. No house was strong enough, so the steam engine was built and thus the era of railroad travel began. Here, with the passenger cars filled with excited travelers, those at the station anxiously await the boarding of the incoming train. |
